Last year was possibly my worst year of racing. More rain than I have ever seen and the car not performing as it should do.
However, there is now light at the end of the tunnel. Jack Spivey has found the solution to why the car wasn't producing the ET that was expected of it.
In Jack's own words;
"Hi Vic, I just had a long talk with the big block guy at Ford SVO. He said every thing sounded correct as far as engine specs. He also said we were launching the car way too soft. That motor wants to be launched at 5000 rpm. We won't go that high yet, but lets move launch rpm to 4400 and see what happens. If ET picks up a lot, then we can go to 4800. His car launches at 5000rpm and runs 9.20 at 142mph. I don't remember what the cam card says to adjust valve lash. It should be somewhere between .025-.030".
He says it should help to back the intake setting to .003-.005" greater than the spec. called out on the cam card. I used to set both intake and exhaust valve lash to .030" on the other motor. Let me know what the card says. When setting the valve lash follow this method. Turn motor until #1 exhaust valve just starts to go down, adjust #1 intake valve. Then turn motor until intake valve goes all the way down and ALMOST all the way back up, adjust exhaust valve. Follow this procedure for #2 thru 8. Only bad thing is we have to wait until spring to try it out. The 9.20 @142 shows we're making enough power, just waiting too long to get into the power band of the engine. If turning engine by hand when adjusting valve lash, it will be a lot easier if you remove the spark plugs first. Let me know how this works out."
Jack is the fountain of all knowledge when it comes to this engine so I'll be taking his advice very soon! Many thanks Jack. |
