Now we think we know!!!
To cut a long story short, on advise from Jack I checked the fuel delivery system, in short it was great for an 500-600 hp engine. We now are looking for 900+. All become clear why timing and jetting was making hardly any changes. Anyway the old Holley pump was good for 110gph the new Barry Grant is 400 gph, plus 2 sizes bigger on the line, and the correct bore filter etc, etc.
All we need now is some track time.
